The Passing of Reverend Lawrence Wrenn

One of the most beloved and well-known members of the CLSA, the Reverend Lawrence G. Wrenn, passed away at his home in Sarasota, FL, on December 14, 2024, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Known to many of his fellow canonists and friends as “Larry,” Father Wrenn was born on June 26, 1928, in New Haven, CT, and was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Hartford on May 14, 1953. He studied canon law at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome, where he earned a licentiate in 1960 and a doctorate in 1976. He served the Archdiocese of Hartford as Judicial Vicar of the Metropolitan Tribunal from 1965 to 1983, and was judge in the tribunal until he retired in 2003.

Father Wrenn became a member of the CLSA in 1962. He was a prolific writer, and many of his practical books were published by the CLSA for decades. His book The Invalid Marriage is still being published, and it continues to assist canonists in writing judicial briefs in marriage cases.

Father Wrenn was selected as the Society’s Role of Law Award recipient in 1976. At a time when the revision process of the 1917 Code of Canon Law was under way—following Vatican II—Father Wrenn used his response to the award citation to lobby for a new way of structuring the laws of the Church—an ecumenical one. In his response he said, “ My idea is not so complicated, and doesn’t really aim at consensus. It’s very simple really. Perhaps too simple. Maybe that’s why nobody has tried it. But the idea is this: that as the Catholic Church sets out to renew and reform its law, it should investigate thoroughly the various legal systems of other Christian churches with a view to using one or other of them, rather than the 1918 Code, as a model or starting point.” Father Wrenn’s entire Role of Law Response is available here.

A few years later, in 1994, Father Wrenn was one of the first members of the CLSA to be awarded “Honorary Member” status. Five years later, the Society commissioned a Festschrift to honor him at its 61st annual convention in Minneapolis, and the resulting publication, The Art of the Good and the Equitable, was published in 2002. Cardinal Adam Maida wrote the preface, and he sang the praises of his friend and fellow canonist, saying, “It would be hard to imagine anyone involved in tribunal work in the dioceses of the United States not being familiar with his written words, especially the several editions of Annulments and, most recently, The Invalid Marriage.”

An online obituary with additional information about the life and passing of Father Lawrence Wrenn can be found at this link.

Requiescat in pace.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our friend and colleague, the Reverend James A. He taught there for over three decades.

In 1987, Father Coriden was chosen as the CLSA’s Role of Law Award recipient. In his citation announcing Father Coriden as the recipient, Father Richard Cunningham noted the following:

A priest of the Diocese of Gary, Indiana, Father Coriden attended St. Meinard's Seminary, received a Licentiate in Sacred Theology and a Doctorate in Canon Law from the Gregorian University, and a Doctor of Laws from The Catholic University's School of Law. He has been admitted to practice before the bar of the Supreme Court of the State of Indiana, the Court of Appeals and the United States District Court of the District of Columbia, and the United States Court of Appeals of the District of Columbia Circuit.

In 2022 Father Coriden joined Msgr. Fred Easton and Donna Miller for a podcast to talk about his life as a canonist. That podcast is available at this link.

The CLSA owes Father Coriden a debt of gratitude for serving as one of the editors for the CLSA’s New Commentary on the Code of Canon Law that was published in 2000. He wrote numerous other books and articles on canon law and theology throughout his life.

CLSA members of a certain age will remember Father Coriden as the stalwart member who proposed a resolution at nearly every convention for many years. A review of past issues of Proceedings from the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s confirms his involvement in the Society in this unique way.

Father Coriden was the recipient of the 2011 Catholic Theology Society of America’s John Courtney Murray Award, the highest honor bestowed by that society on a theologian.

Details of Father Coriden’s funeral arrangements are pending; we will post them when they are made available.
